London: John Camden Hotten, 1869. 164pp. Small quarto. Disbound, sewing, endsheets and spine base intact. Thirty-six illustrations (most colored or partially so). Some marginal smudges, but very good. Item #WRCLIT82256
First edition of this heavily illustrated derivative of Greenwood's CURIOSITIES OF SAVAGE LIFE (1st & 2nd series, 1863-4). Illustrated with wood-engravings by H.N. Woods after drawings by Ernest Griset (1844- 1907). Griset's profoundly demeaning depictions of the original peoples of Africa, Australia, and the Pacific Islands, along with native north, south and polar Americans, barely benefit from his acknowledged expertise at drawing the animals that share the pages with them.
