An early edition, following the first edition of 1859. The failure of his play, 'El hijo pródigo' in 1857 led Alcaron to enlist in the Morocco campaign of 1859-60. As a consequence of that action, he wrote this important work of war reportage, first published late in 1859 (the Prologue is dated 2 December). Its success led to his enlarged public reputation. Among English reading audiences, he is most likely remembered for THE THREE-CORNERED HAT.
