The states discussed in the text and represented in the maps are Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, the Northwest Territory, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, North and South Carolina, Tennesse, and Georgia.
