An animated speech against the Republican and Know-Nothing Parties delivered by staunch Democrat Aaron Venable Brown, a former state governor and congressional representative, before a Nashville party gathering in 1856. In particular, he decries as unconstitutional the Republicans' determination to end slavery and the Know-Nothings' desire to oust Catholics from political participation. Following that year's presidential election, James Buchanan appointed him Postmaster General. Not in Allen. SABIN 8429.
