John Overton (1766-1833) was a Superior Court judge in Tennessee from 1804 to 1810, and was preceded in his position by Andrew Jackson, with whom he was friends. In the first two volumes of this set Overton provides reports and judgements from cases in the Tennessee Superior and Supreme courts, as well as from Federal Circuit Court cases that occurred in the state from 1794 to 1815. John Haywood (1762-1826) was a North Carolina attorney general and historian who later settled in Tennessee and sat as a justice on the state Supreme Court from 1812 to 1826. He continues reports of Tennessee cases in the remaining three volumes of the set, which consist of cases before the Tennessee Appellate and Supreme courts in 1816 and 1817.
