Lyell, the eminent British geologist, went to America in 1841 to lecture in Boston and to pursue his scientific investigations. He returned to England in August of 1842, having travelled through Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York (the folding colored frontispiece is of Niagara Falls), Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, the Midwest (especially Ohio), and Nova Scotia. The folding geological map of the U.S. in the second volume traces his route. "Lyell's powers of close, accurate observation, coupled with his judicious temper, render his works on America among the best of his generation" - Clark. "Interesting, valuable, and scientific" - Sabin. HOWES L575. SABIN 42761. CLARK III:199.
