Cushman's parents were missionaries to the Choctaw beginning in 1820, and he lived among the tribes from that decade to the 1870s, making this "an indispensable source volume" (Gilcrease-Hargrett). Cushman had intimate and deep knowledge of the tribes, and this is a valuable and appreciative study of their history, leaders, and culture. HOWES C976. GILCREASE-HARGRETT, p.140.
