The rare first edition of a classic of southern literature and manners, GEORGIA SCENES... is written in the form of a series of sketches set in frontier Georgia at the beginning of the 19th century. Although in fictional form, the book provides such a richly realistic social history that it presents one of the best pictures of life in that time and place, and straddles the line between fact and fiction. Longstreet said that his purpose was "to supply a chasm in history which has always been overlooked - the manners, customs, amusements, wit dialect, as they appear in all grades of society to an ear and eye witness of them...there is scarcely one word from the beginning to the end of the book that is not strictly GEORGIAN." The book stands at the beginning of a long line of southern humor. HOWES L448, "b." STREETER SALE 1168. DE RENNE I, p.445. GEORGIANA 28. SABIN 41936. WRIGHT I:1721. BAL 12946.
