William CobbettA LITTLE PLAIN ENGLISH, ADDRESSED TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES, ON THE TREATY, NEGOTIATED WITH HIS BRITANNIC MAJESTY, AND ON THE CONDUCT OF THE PRESIDENT RELATIVE THERETO.... By Peter Porcupine.
Philadelphia: Published by Thomas Bradford, 1795. 8,111pp. Half title. Modern half morocco and cloth, spine gilt. Early ink notes to half title and titlepage. Leaves tanned. Very good. Item #WRCAM47274
One of three states, according to Gaines, of the first edition of this Cobbett work, with the last word on page 89 corrected to "that." The "Letters of Franklin," to which this work is largely a response, was a series of articles attributed to Alexander Dallas which appeared in a Philadelphia newspaper in 1795. Cobbett criticizes Dallas' opposition to the Jay treaty, and also gives a spirited defense of President Washington, and roundly criticizes the French Minister, Genet, all in his lively invective. GAINES 7c. PEARL 8. SABIN 13895. HOWES C521. EVANS 28437.
