Bushnell declares the need to establish firm religious foundations in California if true prosperity is to be achieved, and encourages settlers there to put down roots in order to stem the tide of lawlessness. This sermon was preached by the prominent Connecticut Congregational minister while he was in California to recuperate his health. An edition was also printed in San Francisco the same year. COWAN, p.88 (note). GREENWOOD 657 (note).
