Reverdy Johnson, a Democratic U.S. Senator from Maryland, was a notoriously inconsistent and wavering supporter of Reconstruction. He opposed the military occupation of the South, and generally sided with Andrew Johnson in his battles with the Congress on Reconstruction questions and during Johnson's subsequent impeachment. The overall message of the present work is of leniency toward the South. EBERSTADT 136:572. SABIN 36263.
