These sketches of the author's early life in the West and California, including his account of his 1839 overland journey as a prospective settler, were originally published in CENTURY MAGAZINE in 1890-91. Bidwell has the distinction of being the author of the first published narrative of an overland trip to California by a settler, issued circa 1843, and known in but one extant copy. HOWES B432.
