Includes a daily journal from May 1817 through April 1818; an essay on ruta baga as a replacement for the odious potato; "Letters to Morris Birkbeck" discouraging British settlers and ridiculing Birkbeck; and "Mr. Hulme's Journal" from June 3 to Aug. 8, 1818, describing a trip from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh, down the Ohio through Illinois (with an account of Birkbeck's settlement there), Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, and back to Philadelphia.
