A scarce run of this South Carolina newspaper, including the following numbers: March 14 and 30, April 15, and August 21. Includes southern reports on "Sherman, the Raider;" an announcement of Jefferson Davis' resignation and the raising of the U.S. flag at Fort Sumter and the accompanying text of Henry Ward Beecher's address; as well as news about the possibility of a new Mexican Empire under Napoleon, all manner of contemporary political and military news, and many classified ads. Between February and November, 1865, the Courier was operated by George Whittemore, a Union war correspondent installed by Sherman to publish a "loyal Union newspaper" (Allman).
