CAPTAIN JEFF OR FRONTIER LIFE IN TEXAS WITH THE TEXAS RANGERS...BY ONE OF THE NINE A MEMBER OF COMPANY "E" TEXAS RANGERS.

Colorado, Tx. 1906. 161pp. plus 2 plates. Portrait. Gilt cloth. Contents stapled, detached at hinges, else very good. In slipcase. Item #WRCAM1353

The true first edition, not to be confused with the 204- page second edition (not issue) with the same imprint and date. Maltby was an early settler in Burnet County. Between stints in the Mexican and Civil wars and his service with the Rangers, he ranched in Burnet, Lampassas, Llano and San Saba counties. The attributed author was a companion of Big Foot Wallace from 1850 to 1875 during expeditions against the Kiowas and Comanches. Howes calls for a collation of 166pp., but the collation of this issue agrees with that of Graff, who comments that "possibly the present example is an earlier printing." GRAFF 2667. HOWES M243.
