A rare, privately printed account of Hopkins' visit to the Miamis and Pottawatomies in 1804. Also includes a previously unpublished journey to Upper Sandusky in 1799 by George Ellicott, who went with Hopkins on the 1804 trip. "Only a few copies were printed, for distribution among those interested in Indian Affairs. Hopkin's account is a splendid journal of an observant and articulate traveller. He set out in February, 1804, and he provides us with a full day-by-day account of his journey. He crossed the Ohio on March 10th, reached Zanesville on the 15th; provides a fine account of New Lancaster; which he reached the following day. Arrived in Chillicothe on the 17th; where the famous hollow sycamore caught his attention; as well as the Indian mounds. Proceeded up the river to Waynesville on the 23rd, and reached Dayton, March 24, 1804. He arrived at his objective, Fort Wayne, on March 30th, supplying us with a fine account of his transactions with the Indians in association with the famous John Johnston. Much on Fort Defiance, river scenery, etc." - Midland. "This work was first printed in the FRIEND'S INTELLIGENCER, at the request of Mathew Tyson, in order to recall the somewhat dormant interest of the Society of Friends to the state of the Indians. Martha E. Tyson, his daughter, added the Appendix [occupying about half the book]; and prepared the whole for printing in its present shape, at the expense of her father and brother. It was never offered for sale, but all copies were presented to Friends and others interested in Indian affairs" - Field. Rarely met with in commerce, and only the second copy ever offered by this firm. FIELD 718. HOWES T454, "aa." GRAFF 1949. THOMSON 605. HUBACH, p.38. JONES CHECKLIST 1448. MIDLAND NOTES 53:390.
