The following titles are presently in print and obtainable from the William Reese Company:

William S. Reese: JAMES OTTO LEWIS AND HIS ABORIGINAL PORT FOLIO.

New Haven: Overland Press, 2008. 46pp. Quarto. Printed pictorial wrappers. New.

J.O. Lewis produced the first major color plate book on American Indians, published in Philadelphia between 1835 and 1838.  Lewis, a self-taught artist, based the hand colored lithographs in the book on original paintings done mostly around the Great Lakes in the 1820s.  This work provides biographical details on Lewis, as well as examining in detail the somewhat mysterious history of his book, the ABORIGINAL PORTFOLIO. Extensively illustrated with images from the PORTFOLIO, the present work also provides an ideal plate order for the eighty numbered plates found in the complete set. An essential reference work in American color plate books, Western American art, and American Indian iconography.      $60.

  • The 1937 entries are numbered for the first time, for easy reference. Authors' names are in bold face to assist the reader.
  • A comprehensive general index and chronological index assist the researcher.
  • Many errors in the first edition have been corrected and numerous annotations expanded. Collations are now given in a consistent format.
  • The entire work is in a single large octavo volume, handsomely printed and bound, and designed to lie flat for easy use.
  • An essay by Jonathan Hill, "Kenneth Evan Hill as a Book Collector," describes the formation of the collection.
  • In every way, the "new" Hill qualifies as the "second and best" edition.
