Original Portrait of "Lord Rosebery."
Beerbohm, Max:
[Np]. 1903. Portrait format (19 x 12.5 cm), Pen and ink, and watercolor wash on paper. Matted and framed under glass. Very, very slight toning to paper, but in visible fine condition (not examined out of frame). A highly unflattering portrait by Beerbohm of Archibald Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery (1847 - 1929), signed and dated "Max 1903." Rosebery, British Liberal statesman and Prime Minister succeeding Gladstone, was a frequent subject for Beerbohm. Hart-Davis records seventeen caricatures of Rosebery, and although this particular portrait is not specifically described there, it is quite possibly the portrait of Rosebery by Max he records (unseen) as having been exhibited at the Carfax Gallery in 1904. It is similar to the 1905 portrait at the Ashmolean (H-D 1252), but the subject is in plain rather than formal dress, and is not on a pathway. HART-DAVIS 1251.
