First edition of the author's first novel, winner of the National Book Award for its year, and a key work of 20th century U.S. literature. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication: "For Al and Jean Wolfe, Sincerely, Ralph Ellison. April 1952." The recipient, the brother of novelist and Trotsky bodyguard Bernard Wolfe and one-time political activist, may have met Ellison during their years in the Merchant Marine.
