THE MOTHER AND OTHER POEMS.
Sitwell, Edith:
Oxford: Printed for the Author by B.H. Blackwell, 1915. Printed wrappers. A few minor nicks to overlap wrapper edges, otherwise unusually fine. First edition of the author's first book. The edition consisted of five hundred copies, but it has been long asserted that two hundred of those copies were pulped. This copy bears a fine (non-authorial) presentation inscription on the half-title: "Siegfried Sassoon affectionately from Robert Graves 1927." The significance of the Graves-Sassoon relationship needs no elaboration here, and the occasionally unsettled relationships of both Sassoon and Graves with Sitwell have been tracked by their respective biographers. However, this unusual and evocative association copy of Sitwell's first book hearkens back to a period of relative tranquility, in the wake of Graves's dedication of CONTEMPORARY TECHNIQUES IN POETRY (1925) to Sitwell, and prior to the Graves-Sassoon rift over GOOD BYE TO ALL THAT. With the Sassoon Library dispersal sticker on the verso of the half-title. FIFOOT EA1. HAYWARD 329.
