THE LEGION BOOK.
Minchin, Capt. H. Cotton [ed]:
London: Cassell and Company, [1929]. Large quarto. Cloth. Plates. A dull, somewhat worn, but sound copy. First edition, ordinary issue. The trade issue of this anthology/tribute to the British Legion, after the special deluxe edition of one hundred copies reserved for presentation, and a more modest interim public limited issue. The literary contributors to this work include Galsworthy, Walpole, Kipling, Churchill, Wallace, Bennett, Bridges, Binyon, Kennedy, Huxley, David Garnett, Newbolt, Coppard, Squire, Jameson, Wodehouse, Drinkwater, Gilbert Murray, Blunden, Chesterton, Belloc, H. Wolfe, Davies, Millin, Jesse, E. Sitwell, Rebecca West, Carman, Kaye-Smith, Sapper, de la Mare and Berkeley. Although the illustrative component was somewhat smaller in this edition than in the deluxe issue, the following contributed (among others): Nicholson, Strube, Ravilious, Leighton, Bawden, Gill, Rothenstein, Beerbohm, Low, Epstein, John, and Kennington. This copy is accompanied by five leaves and a conjugate bifolium of handmade paper, corresponding to the main insert bearing signatures that was bound into each of the one hundred deluxe copies reserved for presentation. The leaves bear the signatures of over eighty of the contributors to, or parties associated with, the deluxe edition. The signatures of the above parties are present, along with those of Stephen Gooden (who made the title vignette for the deluxe edition) and Charles Ricketts (who designed the binding for the deluxe edition), Clemenceau, Stanley Baldwin, Lloyd George, and MacDonald. These sheets were surplus extras from the deluxe edition, presumably prepared in case of spoilage in binding. KIRKPATRICK B30. WOODS B12. COREY & MACKENZIE 338. FIFOOT EB13a.
