Accompanied by a 3 1/2 pp. a.l.s. from Curle, Chelsea, 29 October 1912, to Cazenove, stating in part: "I'm afraid my stories don't seem of the kind with which you can do much - it is the fault of the stories; but, as it is so, may I ask you to let me have them back to see if I can do anything. I probably can't, but I'd like to try. This, of course, wouldn't affect the terms of our agreement...I'm now writing some better stories & will soon collect together another volume...."
