THE AMERICAN GARDENER: CONTAINING AMPLE DIRECTIONS FOR WORKING A KITCHEN GARDEN...AND COPIOUS INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CULTIVATION OF FLOWER GARDENS, VINEYARDS, NURSERIES, HOP YARDS, GREEN HOUSES AND HOT HOUSES...TO WHICH IS ADDED A TREATISE ON GARDENING, BY
Gardiner, John, and David Hepburn:
Washington. 1826. viii,304pp. Contemporary half calf and marbled boards, early manuscript spine label. Moderate wear at extremities and joints. Lacks front and rear free endpapers, minor foxing. Non-authorial signature affixed to front pastedown. Very good. Third edition of this early American gardening work: a solid and very original copy, with a few contemporary manuscript or printed recipes, etc., laid or sewn in. The author, who describes himself as "late Gardener to Gov. Mercer and Gen. Mason," argues that his work is adapted to American conditions, as opposed to the largely European works generally available. Gardiner provides two January-to-December sequences for gardeners, one for vegetables and one for flowers and shrubs. As noted, Gardiner was one-time gardener to John Mercer, governor Maryland, and to John Mason, son of George Mason, owner of Gunston Hall. RINK 1678. SABIN 26621. AMERICAN IMPRINTS 24659.
