A JOURNAL OF THE VOYAGES AND TRAVELS OF A CORPS OF DISCOVERY, UNDER THE COMMAND OF CAPTAIN LEWIS AND CAPTAIN CLARKE OF THE ARMY OF THE UNITED STATES, FROM THE MOUTH OF THE RIVER MISSOURI THROUGH THE INTERIOR PARTS OF NORTH AMERICA TO THE PACIFIC OCEAN, DU
Gass, Patrick:
London: J. Budd, 1808. iv,381,[2]pp. Attractive contemporary polished calf, spine lettered in gilt. Joints repaired. A very clean copy, with fine endpapers. With the bookplate of Sir Thomas Munro on the front pastedown. The first British edition of the Gass narrative, usually considered the best, printed on a large and elegant format as opposed to the American original. Gass was a sergeant on the expedition and as such was one of the persons charged by Jefferson with keeping a diary of events. Because of the delay in the publication of the official account, Gass' journal became the first to appear, and as such was eagerly taken up by readers starved for information about Lewis and Clark. WAGNER-CAMP 6:2. HOWES G77. GRAFF 1517. FIELD 595.
