The enlarged edition of the biography of Lieut. Gen. William Anne Villettes (1754-1807) by his old friend, Thomas Bowdler, from whom the term "bowdlerize" originated. Villettes served with distinction in a number of campaigns, and was highly thought of by Admiral Nelson. He was governor of Malta from 1801 to 1807, then lieutenant governor of Jamaica, where he died while on an inspection tour. There is a monument to his memory in Westminster Abbey.
