A CATALOGUE OF NEW PILOTS AND SEA CHARTS, PRINTED FOR, AND SOLD BY ROBERT SAYER AND JOHN BENNETT, NO. 53, FLEET- STREET, MAY 10, 1783 [caption title].
Sayer, Robert, and John Bennett:
London: Sayer and Bennett, 1783. Broadside, 14 x 7 1/4 inches. Old horizontal fold. A bit of wear at the edges, but with no loss of text. Very good. A rare advertisement listing more than one hundred maps and charts offered for sale by the distinguished cartographic firm of Sayer & Bennett, the leading British mapmakers of their day. Nearly a third of the maps relate to the Americas and the West Indies, amply showing the importance of accurate and up-to-date maps of the region during the American Revolution and immediately thereafter. Included are the first two parts of Sayer & Bennett's NORTH AMERICAN PILOT, issued in 1783, a complete pilot for the West Indies, Romans' survey of the Florida gulf, and several charts of the North American coast, from New England to South Carolina. Most of the rest of the maps relate to the British Isles or Europe, but there are also maps of Africa as well. Sayer and Bennett's important EAST INDIA PILOT, containing more than 100 maps, is the single most expensive item listed, at more than £12. We can find no listing of this advertisement on OCLC. Rare.
