LITTLE CUBA; OR, CIRCUMSTANTIAL EVIDENCE. BEING A TRUE STORY OF LOVE, WAR & STARTLING ADVENTURES. THE MASSACRE OF YOUNG STUDENTS! SHOOTING THE MEN FOUND ON THE AMERICAN SHIP "VIRGINIUS." SPANISH DEEDS OF BLOOD-CHILLING ATROCITY!
[Barclay, George L.]:
Philadelphia: Barclay, [nd, but ca. 1882]. [2],19-94pp., including nine plates. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers torn along the spine, lightly soiled and edgeworn. Internally clean and tightly bound. A very good copy. Reprint of the scarce 1873 first edition. A sensational blood and guts narrative, amply illustrated with lurid scenes of action and terror. Among the storylines is the tale of Minnie Dallas, who followed her wrongly-accused lover to Cuba, dressed herself as a man, and battled alongside Cuban freedom fighters battling Spanish oppressors. Curiously, the illustrations bear cutlines in both English and German, suggesting that the same plates were used for a German language edition. Though carrying the 1873 date on the copyright page, this edition was likely produced in the early 1880s, based on evidence of battered type and collations similar to the handful of copies dated in the early 1880s listed on OCLC. Scarce in its own right. WRIGHT II:211 (1st ed).
