[NURSERY SPECIMEN BOOK].
[Dewey, D.M.]:

Rochester, N.Y.: D.M. Dewey, [early 1860s]. Seventy-two lithograph and chromolithograph plates with handcoloring and pochoir. Oblong 12mo. Contemporary calf, covers blind tooled. Binding extremely worn. Plates soiled and worn, some with pencil marks and brief annotations, a few plates with small tears and chips, one plate lacking. A fair copy. A specimen book compiled for an unidentified nursery, most probably in New York state. There is no titlepage, but the first plate, serving as a frontispiece, shows two images of a home before and after patronizing the nurserymen ("As it is" and "As it will be"). The remaining leaves are all color botanical plates, almost all printed by the firm of D.M. Dewey of Rochester. A mixture of techniques were employed to create the finished color plates, primarily lithography and chromolithography with various amounts of additional handcoloring and pochoir. A fair copy.
