Spine and corners slightly rubbed. Titlepage lightly browned, a few pencil annotations in the text, a few pages dampstained and soiled. A very good copy. A rare account of the condition of slaves in Puerto Rico in the early 19th century, with additional information about slavery in other regions of the New World and in Africa. Flinter was a British soldier who arrived in Caracas in 1815, when the civil war there was in a particularly violent phase. He served as interpreter to the British embassy and later as a translator between the Spaniards, the English, and the Americans. In addition to this monograph on slavery, Flinter also wrote A HISTORY OF THE REVOLUTION OF CARACAS (London, 1819), AN ACCOUNT OF THE PRESENT STATE OF THE ISLAND OF PUERTO RICO (London, 1834), and other works concerned with the Spanish-American colonies.
