IN CHARITY'S SACRED CAUSE AND THE ARGENTINE CALIFORNIA...WITH EXTRACTS FROM THE LIFE OF DON BOSCO...PRINTED BY THE ORPHANS, FOR THEIR SPECIAL BENEFIT, AT THE SAN CARLOS SCHOOL OF ARTS AND TRADE.
[Argentina]: [Mulhall, Francisco H.]:

Buenos Aires. 1896. xi,347pp., including illustrations, plus plates. With a slightly smaller [4]pp. color advertisement bound in. 12mo. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers chipped, soiled, and a bit creased. Slight foxing (mostly toward the front) and occasional tanning, but generally quite neat internally. Very good. A rare and curious work on the contributions of the British and European settlers in Argentina, with much on the cattle industry there, and including much valuable information on local merchants, illustrated with numerous commercial advertisements. There are lengthy descriptions of the local sheep, cattle, wool, and meat industries of the Chubut River region, the so-called "Argentine California." Mulhall, who lived in Argentina, highlights the achievements of several British, Irish, Scottish, and European families, describing their commercial activities and their charitable efforts. Attendant information on missionary works is also given. The text is printed in English, and the advertisements are either in English or Spanish. Printed by orphans at the San Carlos School of Arts and Trade. A Michael G. Mulhall (perhaps the author's father) produced several works on Argentina and Brazil in the 1860s and '70s. No copies are listed on OCLC, nor is this title listed in Palau. Rare and quite interesting, with valuable information on the cattle and commercial industries of late 19th-century Argentina.
