PHARMACOPOEIA LONDINENSIS OR, THE LONDON DISPENSATORY FURTHER ADORNED BY THE STUDIES AND COLLECTIONS OF THE FELLOWS NOW LIVING, OF THE SAID COLLEGE.
Culpeper, Nicolas:

Boston. 1720. [24],305,[35]pp. Contemporary calf, stamped in blind, rebacked in contemporary style, endsheets renewed. Boards lightly scuffed, rear board bowed. 18th-century ink ownership signature in upper margin of titlepage. Faint early dampstain in upper third of first signature. Chips and small wormhole cluster in rear four leaves, affecting a few characters of text in the index. Portion of margin of pages 39-40 torn away, with no loss to text. Overall a very good copy. In a half morocco and cloth box with gilt morocco label. One of the earliest obtainable American medical imprints. Culpeper's work is a foundation stone of any collection of American medical imprints and a pioneering book in the field of medical botany. "This 1720 Boston edition of Culpeper's PHARMACOPOEIA LONDINENSIS... enjoys the triple distinction of being the first herbal, the first pharmacopeia, and the first full-length medical book published in the American colonies. [It] enjoyed a wide popularity in the colonies, perhaps because of its Puritan slant and its bias toward the household treatment of illness" - Norman. The PHARMACOPOEIA LONDINENSIS... is quite rare, with only a few copies appearing for sale in recent times. AUSTIN 591. NAIP w027610. NORMAN 542. EVANS 2114. NORMAN SALE 394. GUERRA A-48.
