AN EULOGY, ON THE LIFE AND CHARACTER OF DR. ASHBEL SMITH DELIVERED...IN THE CITY OF AUSTIN, TEXAS, JUNE 15, 1886. [wrapper title].
Clopton, A.G., Dr.:
Jefferson, Tx: Iron News Print, 1886. 15,[1]pp. Original green printed wrappers. Wrappers lightly worn at extremities. Trimmed a bit close at foredge, affecting a single letter at the end of a few lines, but with no loss of meaning. Tanned. Good. In a folding cloth chemise and half morocco and cloth slipcase. The University of Texas held its first classes in 1883, and Ashbel Smith was among its founders and served as the first president. Smith had a distinguished life in Texas history, working as a pioneering doctor in the young republic, representing it as a diplomat abroad and to the United States, and serving in the Mexican and Civil wars. The final page contains a notice for the University of Texas at Austin, "tuition free," listing the officers and regents of the school, and the rear wrapper carries an advertisement for the JEFFERSON IRON NEWS, "leading newspaper in Northeast Texas." Jefferson, Texas, is far from Austin, but Clopton was a physician there and likely had this printing of his eulogy done in a small number for private distribution. Scarce.
