THE STONES OF VENICE. THE FOUNDATIONS.
Ruskin, John:

New York: John Wiley, 1851. xv,[1],435,[1],2pp. including seventy-two in- text wood engravings, plus twenty-one lithographic plates. Half title. Later cloth, gilt morocco labels, t.e.g. Foxing in outer leaves, else very good. Of this edition, Hitchcock notes the following: "This unauthorized American edition of the first volume, 'The foundations,' of THE STONES OF VENICE appeared the same year as the first London edition. It is textually identical with the London edition even to the 'List of Plates,' but the plates are omitted, although the text cuts are included." The present copy, however, does have the twenty-one lithographic plates, of which four are printed in color and six in dark tint (printed by Ackerman Lith., 379 Broadway, New York). The first complete American edition (i.e., all three volumes) did not appear until 1860, and here again Hitchcock asserts the plates of the English editions are lacking. It is likely Hitchcock simply inspected one copy which did not have the plates and generalized from there. HITCHCOCK 1087.
