First English edition. Brissot de Warville was a leading Revolutionary and a driving force of the Girondin party, he died in the Terror. His narrative of this trip, made just before the Revolution, is an important work by one who had come "to study men who had just acquired their liberty." He travelled from Boston south as far as Virginia, where he visited with Washington for three days (making some interesting observations on Mount Vernon) and had a political dinner with James Madison.
