Second edition, published same year as the first. Readers have called Bryant's narrative "one of the most detailed and reliable of all overland journals" (Camp) and "one of the classics of California" (Becker). Bryant went overland to California in 1846 and witnessed the dramatic events of 1846-47 during the American seizure of California, where he was appointed ALCALDE of San Francisco by Gen.
