[RECUEIL DE TOUS LES COSTUMES DES ORDRES RELIGIEUX ET MILITAIRES...ENRICHI DE NOTES ET DE PLANCHES COLORIÉES].
Bar, Jacques Charles:
[Paris. 1785-1786]. [11]pp. plus ninety-two handcolored engraved costume plates. Folio. Later 19th-century gilt calf, tooled borders in gilt and blind, spine gilt, red leather label. Internally crisp, with all plates exhibiting beautiful color. Condition is fine throughout. A volume of fine color costume plates, part of a larger series by Jacques Bar, this selection including several depictions of Jesuit missionaries outfitted for work in China, the Indies, etc. One plate purports to depict an American Indian military costume: "Fantassin Indien - avec ses armes." The complete work, issued in parts from 1778 to 1789, comprises six folio volumes with a total of 600 colored plates. The present volume seems to combine various parts, presenting a selection from each of the six volumes, including costumes of European religious and military orders, knights, monastic groups, nuns, Roman military, African and Arab soldiers, and the like. A beautiful French color plate costume volume. COLAS 209. LIPPERHEIDE 1848. HILER, p.63. BRUNET I:642.
