[MANUSCRIPT INSTRUCTIONS CONCERNING CARIBBEAN SUGAR DEALINGS].
Bégon, Michel:
Martinique. Feb. 26, 1683. [2]pp. written in French. Single sheet, 6 1/2 x 8 inches. From the papers of Michel Bégon (see below). This interesting document reflects how Bégon combined official duties with his own private sugar dealings, perhaps typifying French 17th-century practice. A typescript of the text accompanies the manuscript. Michel Bégon (1638-1710) was a French civil servant and colonial administrator who served for a while in Canada, and then in the Caribbean at Martinique. In the 1680s he became intendent at Santo Domingo, and was later sent to Martinique for official duties. It was in the latter capacity that he issued the document offered here. This intriguing manuscript sheds light on 17th-century commercial dealings in the French possessions in the Caribbean.
