A much later edition of the author's A NARRATIVE OF VOYAGES AND COMMERCIAL ENTERPRISES (1842). Cleveland travelled widely as captain of several merchant trading expeditions. This narrative includes accounts of expeditions to China, the northwest coast of America, the Queen Charlotte Islands, Alaska, Hawaii, California, and the west coast of South America. Cleveland's activities in Alaska and the Islands in 1799 and California in 1803 pertained mainly to the fur trade. During much of this period, Cleveland was partners with William Shaler, a colorful character who later figured prominently as an American secret agent on the Texas border and had been serving a similar function on these voyages.
