AMERICAN ANTIQUITIES AND RESEARCHES INTO THE ORIGIN AND HISTORY OF THE RED RACE.
Bradford, Alexander W.:

New York: Wiley & Putnam, 1843. 435pp. Early 20th-century three quarter calf and marbled boards by Bayntun of Bath, a.e.g. Joints a bit worn. Spine labels wanting. Else very good. A later printing, after the first of 1841. The first part is a general overview of the antiquities of America. The second part deals with the question of the origins of the native inhabitants of America, of which Field states: "Mr. Bradford was peculiarly fitted for such a treatment of this subject, which will forever be the debatable ground of the ethnologist and the philosopher." He covers most of the theories of migration then in vogue, including comparisons between new and old world antiquities, e.g. the pyramids of Meso-America with those of Egypt. "An able investigation of the subject. A desirable companion to the work of Stephens and others, on the ruins of Central America" - Sabin. FIELD 169 (1st ed). SABIN 7233.
