EXPLORATION OF THE VALLEY OF THE AMAZON.
Herndon, William Lewis, Lieut.:

Washington. 1854. 414pp. plus 16 plates including frontispiece, and large folding map, partially colored. Original cloth. Frayed at extremities, bit chipped at top of spine, moderate to heavy foxing, small private bookplate and signature. A sound copy. This edition is apparently less common than the three- volume set which was published the same year under the authorship of Herndon and Lardner Gibbon, one volume containing Herndon's narrative, one volume containing that of Gibbon, and the third volume being an atlas. The present volume contains only Herndon's account. Sabin, Hill, and Borba de Moraes make no mention of this edition, and the NUC locates six copies. Herndon and Gibbon went to Lima together. Herndon went north to the Amazon while Gibbon navigated rivers in the south. They met in Serpa and sailed together down the Amazon to Para. "...Contain[s] minute, accurate, and very interesting accounts of the aborigines of the Andes, and the Amazon and its tributaries..." - Sabin. The map is a detailed illustration of the Valley of the Amazon, with the routes of Gibbon and Herndon traced in color. HILL 803. SABIN 31524. BORBA DE MORAES I, p.336. (all refs)
