New York. [nd, ca. 1870?]. 532pp. plus ads. Portrait. Original gilt pictorial cloth. Cloth discolored, frayed at head of spine, rear inner hinge cracked. Bit tanned, else internally very good. A later edition of one of the last of the famous Father's works. This title was originally published in Paris in 1858 as CINQUANTE NOUVELLES LETTRES..., but was not published in translation for five years because of the bankruptcy of the publisher. Evidently the sheets were printed and sat for some time, because when they were issued in 1863 they appeared under three different New York imprints, evidently with cancel titles. Several of De Smet's journeys receive notable attention herein, especially his visit to the Sioux in 1848 and his passage from the Missouri River at Fort Union to Fort Laramie in 1851. HOWES D289.
