"[Gerhard] collected material for [this] book on a personal visit to the state in 1855, by correspondence with Illinois citizens, from Illinois newspapers, and from the publications of Brown, Ford, Reynolds, Peck, Hall, Drown, and others" - Byrd. Included are lengthy sections concerning Illinois laws, history, agriculture and fruit culture.
