[AUTOGRAPH LETTER, SIGNED, FROM WILLIAM B. LEWIS TO ANDREW JACKSON].
Lewis, William B.:

Washington. April 30, 1844. [1]p., addressed on verso. On very friable paper, cracking at folds, with loss where wax seal was removed. A few letters of text affected by cracking, else sound. An important political letter to Andrew Jackson from his lifelong friend, William B. Lewis, concerning the annexation of Texas. Lewis knew Jackson from youth, served as his quartermaster in the War of 1812, and was a faithful political adherent and member of Jackson's "Kitchen Cabinet." After Jackson's retirement, Lewis remained in Washington as an auditor in the Treasury and as Jackson's eyes and ears. In that capacity Lewis writes this letter, transmitting the newspaper account of the annexation treaty: "I send you herewith, my dear Genl, a newspaper containing the Treaty with Texas and the Presidents message which accompanied it to the Senate - Both of which, it seems, have been CLANDESTINELY obtained and published, a few days ago, by the New York Evening Post. WBL." The verso is addressed: "From WB Lewis To General Andrew Jackson, Hermitage, near Nashville, Tennessee." A letter from the Papers of Andrew Jackson accompanies the manuscript.
